Safety Tips:Golf Cart Safety – Critical Training Items to Avoid Accidents Or Injury

by Safety Tips on February 23, 2009

Whether on the golf course or at the jobsite, golf carts are a very useful mode of transportation. But did you know that these simple and slow vehicles can be extremely dangerous? In fact, golf carts are responsible for many accidents each year which cause injury, property damage, and even death. If you use a golf cart for work or play, keep these tips in mind:
Tip #1: Drivers and passengers must remain seated while the golf cart is moving. This safety consideration will ensure that no one accidentally falls out of the cart while it is operating.
Tip #2: Golf carts should not be driven faster than 15 miles per hour. If you are on rough, hilly, or uneven terrain, the maximum speed is much less. Most drivers do not understand that a cart is not very stable and many tip over each and every year. Of course, tipping over in a golf cart could cause serious damage to the driver, passenger, and cart itself.
Tip #3: Never make drastic turns with a golf cart particularly if going downhill or on uneven ground. Why? As previously stated the vehicle is not very stable and could easily tip over. Hard turns of the steering wheel only magnify this fact.
Tip #4: Never drink alcoholic beverages while operating a golf cart. Now, if you are golfing this isn’t going to be a very popular tip. If you use a golf cart on the jobsite this final tip will be much easier to enforce. The fact is a driver who is impaired by alcohol is more likely to driver faster, more erratic, and with less caution.
All persons who operate a golf cart, whether for work or play, should undergo some form of safety training. Whether by reading a book, or watching a golf cart safety video, drivers and passengers should be trained on the golf carts uses and limitations.
If you need to train your employees on the safe uses of a golf cart, this golf cart safety video is an excellent reference.
